* After the flight of Marranos from Spain and Portugal to the Netherlands in the late 16th and early 17th century, Grotius, Dutch statesman, theologian and historian, was commissioned by the estates of Holland ‘to amend the regulations for protecting Jews living in these lands from all scandals, anxieties and sanctions’. Grotius' report, known as Remonstrantie or Jodenreglement, appeared in 1615, but was not published in full until 1949 by Dr. Jaap Meijer, who based his publication on the well known manuscript from the Livraria Montezinos in Amsterdam.
