* Libanius of Antoch (c. 314-393) was a Greek rhetoric, Sophist, friend of emperor Julian, teacher of John Chrysostom and Theodore of Mopsuestia. His letters and speeches are an important source of information about the second half of the 4th century and its social, political and cultural life during the rise of Christianity. This edition of Libanius’ Letters also includes the Zambeccari translations and dedicatory letters, edited by Johannes Sommerfeld (pp. 729-828). Most of the letters translated by Francesco Zambeccari (c. 1443- 1475, Italian humanist) are now considered forgeries.
