* Max Werner, Aleksandr Mikhailovich Shfrin, was born in Kharkov, Ukraine, in 1901. After studies in social science and economics he went to Germany in 1923, publishing various articles on economic and military topics. In 1923 he fled to France and between 1939 and 1943 he published three books on the war of the Soviet Union and the West against the German Reich. He died in New York in 1951.
