* Isaac Orobio de Castro (1617-1687), Jewish philosopher and physician of Marrano Portuguese descent. After fleeing Spain from the Inquisition and a stay in France he arrived in Amsterdam in 1666. Here he practised as a physician, as well as writing several philosophical and religious works.
